about

The Sea Urchins' Pristine Christine was the first record to be released on Sarah Records, and still sounds like the most perfect way of launching a new label, urgent and important and guaranteed to fill dancefloors wherever it's played. The band recorded very few songs in their short lifetime, and the seven collected here made up their three Sarah 7"s. (Before joining Sarah, there had been two flexidiscs, Cling Film and Summershine, and there was a post-Sarah single on Cheree, but that was it.) What extraordinary songs they were, though, and what an extraordinary lyricist and singer James Roberts is: Pristine Christine and Solace are the two big pop songs, the latter produced by Creation Records' Joe Foster, but buried away on the B-side of Sarah 001 is the bruised plangency of Sullen Eyes ("unbelieving, unaccepting, un-everything-with-a-positive-ring"), while Please Rain Fall and Wild Grass Pictures allow James's voice to ache and soar, ache and soar.

The Sea Urchins Birmingham, UK

The Sea Urchins were a 5-piece from West Bromwich: James Roberts (vocals), Simon Woodcock (guitar), Robert Cooksey (guitar), Mark Bevin (bass), Bridget Duffy (tambourine, organ), and Patrick Roberts (drums).
